SCIENTIFIC REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2013
Research project with the title
The Abolitionist Movement in the Context of Civil and Political Emancipation in Modern Romania, project code: PN-II-ID-PCE-2011-3-0655

The activities developed by the research team in the period 5 December 2012-4 December 2013 are the ones included in the project plan, the version from the Additional act no. 1/2013.

Documentation

In the conditions where this research project is mainly built on unpublished archive materials and on epoch publications, and their volume is big, in 2013 we continued the documentation work. We worked in various archives in the country, especially at the National Central Historical Archives (ANIC) and in two county archives: ADJAN Iaşi and ANDJ Botoşani. Other places where we searched documents and manuscripts were the Romanian Academy Library (BAR), the Romanian National Library, the University Central Library (BCU) Iaşi and several private collections. The epoch press and other older or newer publications were consulted at BAR, in the library of the “Nicolae Iorga" Institute of History, BCU Iaşi, BCU Cluj and a number of smaller libraries. At the documentation activity in archives and libraries in the country, all research team members participated.
Research stays in archives abroad were made by: Viorel Achim at the Centre des Archives diplomatiques de Nantes (20 August-3 September 2013) and Geheimes Staatsarchiv PK Berlin (15-28 September 2013); Venera Achim at Archives diplomatiques La Courneuve, Paris, and at the Centre des Archives diplomatiques de Nantes (11 August-3 September 2013); Raluca Tomi at the National Archives of Torino (7-21 September 2013); and Dan-Nagy Pienaru in the archives of Istanbul and Ankara, especially the Archive of the Ministry of Exterior (23 July-25 August 2013). The stays abroad were used to study the most recent literature regarding the slavery, abolitionism and emancipation in the Western world as well.
We kept the work division within the team, in respect that every researcher followed certain topics and issues, in order to avoid intersections. There are issues though where two or three researchers have been working together on documentation, on elaborating studies or editing.

Elaboration of studies and books

In parallel with the activity of documentation, researchers worked on elaborating studies and books representing the main productions of the project.
In 2013 the great effort was granted to the work on the two books in Romanian, which, along with the volume in English (on which we shall work in 2014), gathers the main results of the research:
1) The volume Aboliţionismul românesc. Textele [The Romanian Abolitionism. The Texts], which is an anthology of texts written by Romanian abolitionists (volume editat de Venera Achim, Viorel Achim şi Raluca Tomi);
2) The monograph volume regarding the Romanian abolitionism (for which we do not have a final title yet) - on which we shall work in 2014 as well.

Conferences organized within the research project

3. Scientific debate, Iaşi, 31 October 2013

Our research project organized in collaboration with the “A.D. Xenopol" Institute of History from Iaşi the scientific debate “Abolitionism, Emancipation and Civil Society in Romania, the 19th-20th Centuries", which took place within the Academic Days, in Iaşi, on 31 October 2013. The organizer and moderator was Cătălin Turliuc (member of the research group). Another member of the research group who participated at the debate was Venera Achim.

The Internet page

Our research team has its own site (www.iini-minorities.ro), where the project is presented and the activities so far are registered. The site is thought to provide a better visibility of the project and favor the contacts with researchers interested from the country and abroad. All the information on the site is in Romanian and English.

I consider that the activity developed by this research group in the period December 2012-December 2013 went on according to the plan. We have disseminated in form of publications part of our research findings, and in 2014 we shall conclude and publish the monographic volume about the Romanian abolitionism and the study volume in English, on the same theme. We believe that the results obtained so far are proving the original character and the high quality of our research on a topic important for the actual preoccupations of the world historiography.
